With equal passion for teaching and performing music, flutist Sharon Kitzis excels in both arenas. Sharon is especially dedicated to sharing her passion for music with children, as she hopes to inspire the next generation of budding musicians. She currently teaches elementary band in the William Floyd School District, and has previously held music teaching positions in the Patchogue-Medford and East Rockaway School Districts on Long Island. Sharon has also taught elementary chorus and preschool-aged music classes. She maintains a private studio of flute students of all ages, and prepares flutists for NYSSMA, All County and All State festivals.
In addition to her flourishing career in education, Sharon is committed to a high standard of performance on the flute. In 2013, Sharon co-founded and continues to perform as principal flutist of the New Inlet Chamber Orchestra, whose mission is to perform quality live music for Long Island audiences for free. She has also performed as principal flutist of the Band of Long Island, under the direction of Michael Flamhaft. Sharon earned her Master's Degree in Flute Performance at SUNY Purchase, where studied with Dr. Tara Helen O’Connor, and participated in master classes with Susan-Palma Nidel and Conor Nelson. She performed in the Purchase Symphony Orchestra, in small chamber ensembles, and performed on piccolo, flute, alto flute, and bass flute with the Contemporary Ensemble and Flute Ensemble. At SUNY Fredonia, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Music Education, Summa Cum Laude, Sharon was the principal flutist of the Wind Ensemble and a member of the Symphony Orchestra, Flute Ensemble, and College Choir.
Sharon's primary flute teachers include Dr. Tara Helen O'Connor, Dr. Susan Royal, Lauren Ausubel, and Eve Pyser. Sharon's additional interests include theatre, art, hiking, the open water, gymnastics, yoga, and a good binge-watch on Netflix or Hulu.
